We’d spent two days on the mountain already: two wide open days, learning the trails, enjoying the adventure, testing our limits and taking it easy. And then, on the third day, we found a new run, away from the main thoroughfare, that was perfect. It had sections that forced us to practice our turning and improve our skills, and sections where we could relax. Plus we were the only snowboarders on it so we could ride in huge arcs back and forth across the steepest sections without worrying about getting in anyone’s way.
We daydreamed about owning one of the cabins that dotted the backside of the resort.
We marveled that the beauty of the Rockies.
We wished our trip would never end.
The blue skies and clean air were a treat. And while Crested Butte will always rank behind Mammoth as our favorite place to visit and go boarding, there was something magical about being in the Colorado Rockies. Whenever I look at this picture (which is in rotation as one that I use for my desktop background both at home and at work), I feel that magic stirring within me and a longing for adventure grows anew.
When it calls, I must answer.

Since he is using one of my pictures, this is a quick little truthful write up for this week’s Once More with Feeling picture prompt. Be on the the lookout for my next post which will use the same picture and be flash fiction.
I’m a fan of mammoth and everything around it!
We love Mammoth. We even got married there. 😉 Ceremony on the sun deck at McCoy station. Champagne toast at the Top of the Sierra. Reception at Parallax. One of the best days of my life, and I’m not just saying that because I’m contractually obligated too.
Crested Butte, in Colorado, is the closest we have come to finding that same draw to a location that we have with Mammoth.
Wow! That is a wonderful place to celebrate togetherness! Crested Butte is in our list too.
Hooray!
Well, you know what they say, brilliant minds think alike. 😉
[…] My second post for this week’s Once More with Feeling picture prompt – which happens to be one of my photos. This is a bit of flash fiction, but if you want to read the truth of this photo, you can find it here. […]
Adventure awaits 😀
Exactly! 😀
You must answer indeed!
I know… I always do. Even this year we made it up to Mammoth once.
That’s so awesome!
Woohooo!!
Probably going to be that way for a couple years – make a trip once a year… Then, maybe when the Little Prince is old enough to appreciate being on the mountain a bit more, we will think about getting season passes again, like we used to, pre-parenthood. When we were rich and wild and carefree. 😛 Though, it’s so expensive already, in a couple years we may be priced out. We’ll just have to wait and see.
I totally understand. If it’s a passion for all of you though, it’s probably worth it!
Passion, yes, but we have lots of those… and sometimes the more cost efficient passions are forced to take precedence. Especially now that there is college tuition to be saving for.
Right!
Sheesh, this growing up and being responsible gig stinks!
I know right?! And kids think it’s easy and we can do whatever we want. HA!
Well, to be fair, a lot of things are easier.
Are they?
Driving, voting, gambling, drinking… not only easier, but legal.
ahaha!
Hooray! Getting laughs is what I’m here for.
There is just something about the mountains. That air, the views. I feel the same way about the alps. Pure magic.
The alps?! grumble grumble name dropper grumble grumble
I mean… Hooray for mountains! 😀
Ah, but I had a short taste of living in the mountains, and if I’m remembering right, you’re there. I’ve only passed through the Rockies once. And while I love our eastern mountains — especially the ones in Maine that are right at the sea — I miss the mountains.
Here’s my short mountain story: http://fiftyfourandahalf.com/2012/05/24/me-and-julie/
Sadly, no, I don’t live at the mountains. I just visit them as often as I can… and spend at least a week camping and another week backpacking every summer.
