pry the hands away

The hands reached from the darkness,
Not rending or tearing,
But menacing all the same.

The hands held me in place,
It wasn’t painful,
But I struggled all the same.

The hands drew tighter against my flesh,
Though it wasn’t my skin they desired,
They crushed it all the same.

The hands blocked my air,
They had no need of it,
Nor me, all the same.

I clutched at my throat to pry the hands away,
But found nothing there,
And the feeling of helplessness remained,
All the same.
