let’s play

The showdown had been coming for days.  Bart and Miles had been bickering away, getting under each others’ skin, posturing and thumping their chests: big men, big ideas, and the big guns to back them.  The final straw had come over a dispute at the poker table.  Both had known they should walk away but it had gone too far.

The afternoon sun poured out of the unblemished sky, parching the air and ground.  The dirt road crunched under their boot heels as they took to the street, faced off, and paced backwards from one another.  The town hadn’t seen a showdown in years and, rather than hide behind closed doors and peek through windows, everyone came out to watch the spectacle.

“You’re a liar and cheat and a no good scourge of the Earth,” Bart yelled across.  Sweat pooled under his hat and dripped down his cheeks.  The droplets fell to the road and were soaked up by the dirt and dust.

“You’re a cowardly, yellow-bellied, skirt wearing dog,” Miles replied.  His lips twitched in the faintest of smiles and his hand itched to pull his long iron and blaze away.  But he would never draw first, that wasn’t his way.  “You think I’m a cheater, pull your smoke-wagon and we’ll let the lead decide the truth!”

Bart shook his head, “You’ll not make me the bad guy in this.  You draw first!”

“Coward.  Throw down!”

“Cheater.”

“Boys, it’s time for lunch.”  Their mother’s voice carried across the yard to interrupt their play.  “Come inside, take your shoes off, and wash your hands, I’ve got sandwiches and juice set on the table for you.”

Bart and Miles grinned and raced each other to the kitchen.  They’d already started taking their shoes off when their mom poked her head out the door again and said, “Don’t forget to put your guns in the toybox.  No guns are allowed in my house, you lawless gunslingers.”

“Aw, Mom!”
