a fool’s quest

“You won’t find what you are looking for?”  Her tone was matter-of-fact, yet her appearance showed the annoyance she didn’t allow in her words.

“I have to try.”

She frowned and shook her head.  He grinned and looked skyward.  He knew his destiny was out there waiting for him among the stars.

“They’ll call you a rainbow chaser.  They’ll call you a fool.”

“So be it.”

“Then you are already a fool.”  She turned and disappeared into their home.  She hoped that he would abandon his plans if she wasn’t there to watch.  She hoped that he would come to his senses and join her inside.  She wished that there could have been some other way for him to ensure their future livelihood.

When he didn’t follow, she went to the kitchen window to watch even though she had told herself she wouldn’t.  The backyard came into view as she stepped in front of the sink and she caught a glimpse of his backside as he climbed into his rocket.

“Please be safe,” she whispered into the silence.

Smoke began billowing out of the bottom of his craft.

“Please be successful.”

Her husband blasted out of the yard and pierced the heavens, questing after an uncharted planet to mine for precious metals he could sell back on Earth.  With all the world’s resources having been stripped,  finding new deposits on other plants had become the only way for economies to stay solvent.  As they faltered, individual families had to take it upon themselves to go in search of new deposits.

Their government had already folded and they had held out as long as they could.  But her husband’s journey into the stars was their family’s last hope for survival.

As the spark of the rocket’s glare winked out of sight, she let go of the breath she’d been holding onto.  She leaned back on her heels, tilted her head up, and closed her eyes.

“I hope you find our rainbow…”
