You can go ahead and come down from your soap box.

Daily Prompt: Art Appreciation

by michelle w. on April 30, 2013

Do you need to agree with an artist’s lifestyle or politics to appreciate their art? To spend money on it?

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Does this seem like a couple of simple “yes” or “no” questions to anyone else?  Alas, I digress…

I tend to tune out the talking heads when they get up on their soap boxes and start preaching to the masses and that includes my favorite artists too.  I don’t have to agree with you, with your politics, with your beliefs on religion, with your judgements and behaviors to still understand and appreciate that you are truly talented at what you do when you step down from your soap box and return to being an entertainer.  I have before and will continue to support artists I don’t agree with 100% of the time.

And, honestly, I can’t even tell you who all I’m referring to because for the most part I don’t pay attention to these people when they remove themselves from the environment I like them in.

I don’t even have a problem with you setting aside your talent for awhile to step on that soap box in the first place.  We are all allowed to voice our opinions, that’s one of those things that makes this place great.  Say what you will, people will hear you, and then they can decide on their own if they like what you had on offer or not.

However, if I paid money to buy a ticket to attend some sort of art thing – a concert for example – and the artist sets aside his entertainer role while on stage to preach at me about this or that it really irks me.  I didn’t pay to see you get on your soap box.  I didn’t drive however long to then wait in long lines full of the rowdy stinking masses to hear (0r see) anything other than who you are as an entertainer.  Get back to the music, or the show, or the art, or…

  1. it is a simple yes and no, sadly the daily prompt prompts are relying on the fact that people wont just put yes or no… the daily prompts are sadly lacking in quality. Good answer though.

    • Well… for the most part, we are writers on here, right? So, we probably wouldn’t put just “yes” or “no” even if they they seriously asked us yes/no questions… We tend towards the verbose. 😉

    • *bows* Thank you, thank you. *bows again for good measure and slowly backs off stage*

Hmm… is it irony? I preached on my entertainment blog about not preaching when you are supposed to be entertaining… Or, was my preaching still part of my entertainment value? Well, at least no one had to pay to hear (read) me…

    – Right? I mean that, like truly and honestly… RIGHT?

But then again, I do so sorely get turned off by certain politics enough to be turned off by the artist. I think. Maybe not. Dammit! 😉

    • Hah!! Who knows anymore… it’s all a mystery anyway. Wait, what were we talking about? Do you know what Bono is up to these days? What cause is Springsteen heralding now?

      • If you play a doctor on tv I’ll do as you say. But normally I take my vitamins with my breakfast. Should I brush my teeth before my bfast? What if I eat an orange?

p.s. sorry I’m sucking all your time, I’m waiting for paint to dry. :p

      • I don’t play a doctor on TV, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night… I subscribe to the belief that you have to constantly, preemptively, change things around – since life is all about change – if you do the mixing up on your own you are less often forced to endure whatever change life would have thrown at you without warning – so, sometimes teeth should get brushed before you are done eating…
Or I could just be making all that up. 😉

      • The other day I was eating chips called Fuego. I had to stop. Munch on a Tums. Then resume eating the chips. When I change stuff I go crazy like that! Danger is MY middle name…

  3. I agree–I loathe polemic, even when it’s polemic I agree with. I can appreciate the art of someone that I disagree with–I think it’s safe to say that Oliver Stone and I disagree on politics rather sharply, but I think “JFK” is a fantastic film because he’s a good enough artist to put the story first. On the other hand, as much as I liked the concept behind the show “Numb3rs”, I found a lot of the episodes to be thinly veiled political screeds and turned them off.

    • At that point though, we’ve moved away from the entertainer dabbling in politics and into the realm of the entertainer trying to entertain via politics… I’ve noticed recently a couple shows on TV that have thinly (and sometimes in-your-face) messages based on things going on in the world – they present the problem and use the characters of the show to “prove” why one answer is better than another. None of these instances have been bad enough that I turned the show off yet, but it’s probably only a matter of time.

  4. consider it performance art, and accept it as a package, never knowing exactly what surprise you will find inside. don’t have to like it all, you may prefer the box or wrapping that it came in )

  5. Agree, DJ. I can think of a whole group of people I admire for their creative talents on music, film, visual arts, culinary, etc. but I may not want to consider them my friend. I may not agree with their lifestyle, moral or ethical standards, or their politics and/or religious beliefs. Because I pay for the appreciation of their art, I can choose to compartmentalize.
