an observation

the sun had not yet begun to rise, but a warm glow caressed the sky in the east
the hills on the horizon sat below the lightening sky in sharp contrast
jutting up into it as a solid black mass
it looked like someone had taken a hammer to the horizon and smashed away
what remained of the sky was jagged and torn
below that that there was nothing
blank
devoid
there was a moment of vertigo
where it seemed that the darkness would swallow the world
or the rest of the sky would surely crack and crumble
and then the sky lightened further and the hills were defined
the moment passed
and I went on with my day
