After posting two weeks ago about movie quotes, and reading through other submissions across the blogosphere, and then posting last week about literary quotes that I’ve incorporated into my everyday conversations, it dawned on me that I could do a series of posts on the dialogue I’ve stolen borrowered procured from cinema (already covered), literature (already covered), and music.
So, I humbly submit the third installment in this series, and yes, I know it doesn’t make sense to have this be the third installment but label it as the second. I’m sorry if that’s confusing, but that’s just the way I roll (kind of like how I leave my about page blank):
Over the years I’ve incorporated an abundance of song lyrics into my day to day lingo. The following is a useful guide I’ve put together of situations you may find yourself in and the appropriate responses.
Q: What do you say when life has you down and there is no end in sight?
A: “I met a girl who sang the blues, and asked her for some happy news. She just smiled and turned away.”
- Don McLean – American Pie
Q: What do you say when it feels like your life has been split in two?
A: “Sometimes it’s like someone took a knife baby, Edgy and dull, and cut a six-inch valley through the middle of my soul.”
- Bruce Springsteen – I’m on Fire
Q: What do you say when you find yourself in a turbulent relationship?
A: “Maybe that’s what happens when a tornado meets a volcano.”
- Eminem – Love the Way You Lie
Q: What do you say when you need some inspirational words to get you up and moving?
A: “I’ve got this energy beneath my feet Like something undergound’s gonna come up and carry me.”
- The Killers – Sam’s Town
Q: What do you say when you are trying your best, and failing, to make someone else happy?
A: “If I could, I’d only wanna make me smile, if you wanna stay with me awhile.”
- +44 – Make You Smile
Q: What do you say when you see people being taken advantage of by those around them, those who are supposed to be helping them?
A: “Well the God I believe in isn’t short of cash mister!”
- U2 – Bullet the Blue Sky (from the Rattle and Hum album)
Q: What do you say when the world is closing in around you and you need to get away from it all for awhile?
A: “Echoes and silence, patience and grace, all of these moments I’ll never replace. No fear of my heart, absence of faith, all I want is to be home.”
- Foo Fighters – Home
Q: What do you say when someone needs inspiration to rise up and take charge of their own life?
A: “Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery; none but ourselves can free our minds.”
- Bob Marley – Redemption Song
Q: What do you say when your special someone is looking especially nice?
A: “Foxy lady!”
- Jimmy Hendrix – Foxy Lady
Q: What do you say when you see people seemingly succeeding in life without putting in any effort?
A: “That ain’t workin’, that’s the way you do it, money for nothin’ and chicks for free.”
- Dire Straits – Money for Nothing
Q: What do you say if life seems jolly rotten?
A: “Always look on the bright side of life.”
- Monty Python – Always Look on the Bright Side of Life
Q: What do you say when you are contemplating violence on someone but want to verbalize it rather than actually carry through with it?
A: “Boot to the head!”
- Frantics – Boot to the Head
This, along with the first and second, are by no means complete lists, but they should be enough to get you through most of life’s experiences. Well, I’ve found them useful anyway.
(“Very good, class.”)

I want more! Please…
More?!!! But, but, but… I just did three posts on this subject (sort of) in short duration (okay it’s been three weeks)! Aren’t you done with it? (Shh, don’t tell anyone but I started composing a fourth in my head this morning.)
Can’t wait.
I love it! Haha..
Where did you get the idea?
The first one came from a daily prompt, and then I just kept expanding on it. Glad you enjoyed it.
I’ve done a whole writing project based on movie trailers , 12 trailers, 12 short stories, would be interested in feedback.

Headed over to your site to check it out right now!
Loved it! You covered quite the range of music genre. More, more, more!
Very clever dj!!!
Thanks!
Absolutely adore Monty Python — we go to Hockey games and the people behind us have vuvuzelas … and I can’t help but think about the “trumpets” … if you remember that scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail! And the French Taunter is full of *wonderful* … um …. taunts, for when people get obnoxious and you can’t say anything in return. This little voice in my head calls out, “you silly English kaaaahh-nickets!” Among other things.
BTW you’d get a kick out of this … I was at the oncologist’s office and someone stopped me and said, “hey! great t-shirt!” I was wearing the NaNoWriMo shirt. It was great to see someone else who knew about the project!
Keep up the AWESOME blogging!
So cool about the NaNo recognition! I find myself saying “Now go away, or I shall taunt you a second time” a lot. It just seems to work.
